Persistence of Vision
Explain the concept of persistence
of vision using the flip book or phenakistoscope
Persistence of vision is the retention of a visual image for a short period of time after the removal of
the stimulus that produced it. It is the phenomenon that produces the illusion of
movement when viewing motion pictures. Persistence of vision can be shown through the use of a flipbook or phenakistoscope (see image below).

A phenakistoscope shows persistence of vision when spun, because the eye cannot
keep up with the images the illusion of movement happens.

Paper Animation
Describe the stop motion process of papermation used by Erez Horovitz to create Josh Ritter's film clip.
Did this process remind you of another animation process that you have read about in this task?
The stop motion process of papermation used in Josh Ritter's video is interesting and colourful. The use of papermation gives the animation a unique feel with different textures to what you would find in a CGI animation. I thought that the smoothness of the animation is very good for a stop-motion video.
The process of stop-motion photography reminded me of the other animation process: claymation.

South Park
Why do creators of South Park (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) NOW animate using a computer instead of using traditional paper cut out animation
Why do creators of South Park (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) NOW animate using a computer instead of using traditional paper cut out animation
Trey Parker and Matt Stone use computer generated imagery (CGI) to animate their popular cartoon television show South Park. They used papermation to create the pilot episode and all subsequent episodes have been created with software that emulates the cutout technique. They animate this way because Parker and Stone have a very tight schedule to produce episodes (6 days) and paper animation takes a long time to complete. Another reason why they don't use papermation is because they can now get high definition characters with fluid animation and clear textures, which they weren't able to achieve with papermation.
